National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is Medical CET of India 2012
The Supreme Court on Monday green signalled Medical Council of India ( MCI) to conduct a common test for undergraduate medical courses all over India. The move may trigger a controversy as Maharashtra and Karnataka have already announced schedules of their common engineering and medical entrance exams while the Tamil Nadu admits students on basis of Class XII scores. The Maharashtra Health and Technology Common Entrance Examination ( MHT-CET) is slated for May 12.
The apex court verdict however was hailed in medical circles. Interestingly, the framework for the proposed exam to be called National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) was prepared by a panel headed by city-based MCI member Dr Ved Prakash Mishra. Former vice-chancellor of MGR university of Health Sciences in TN DR CV Bhirmanandham was his partner.
After SC decision, now the apex medical education body needs to come up with a notification. Once it happens, it can conduct single CET for MBBS admissions to over 300 medical colleges across India. Over 31,000 MBBS seats would be filled through this exam as would be 11,000 PG seats. NEET is slated to have a national merit list along with state-wise rankings for candidates from general, SC, ST and OBC categories as well as disabled persons.
“The apex court has done a right thing and all the objections to it were taken care in our report,” an elated Dr Mishra told TOI. He added that the far-reaching decision regarding NEET was taken by MCI in its executive meting on June 10, 2009. “Our report has already been cleared by MCI’s general body and sent to ministries of HRD and health and family welfare along with the UGC,” he declared.
